Port Blair, Aug 26: Over 350 Naval NCC cadets including girls undertook tree plantation drive braving the rains in the campus of Govt. Sr. Sec. School, Bhatubasti. The event was inaugurated by planting a Jamun sapling by Dr. Shashi Kumar (IFS), Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Wild Life), A&N Islands.
He told the cadets and students of the school assembled in large numbers to save our planet by planting more and more trees so that the earth continues to look green for years to come. He also said that planting trees is a social service as the fresh air and the environmental benefits of a tree is enjoyed by all for many years. He emphasized on the threat of global warming which is an outcome of deforestation being the major factor.
He further lauded the cadets and the Naval Unit for undertaking the wonderful task even post Van Mahotsav since the climate is suitable round the year for afforestation. He wished other institutions to follow the example so that the A&N Islands retain its glory for years to come. Over 100 saplings of different types were planted during the drive.
Commander John E Mathew, Commanding Officer of NCC Naval Unit also planted a sapling and thanked the Vice-principal of the school Mr. J.B. Rai for making the arrangements. He also requested him to entrust each tree planted today to individual students to nurture it and enjoy as it grows since majority of the saplings are fruit bearing.
