Billydground, July 12: Thoratang Bailey Bridge, one of the most crucial bridges of Andaman Trunk Road, which connects Port Blair city with North Andaman, today collapsed when two fully loaded tippers were crossing the bridge at around 4.00 PM.
According to reports the Thoratang Bailey Bridge, constructed over Thoratang Nallah nearly five years back, caved in from middle and fell inside the Nallah, leaving both the trucks struck in the bridge.
Sources said that the Bailey bridge collapse because of excessive weight of two Tippers being operated by Contractor of Andaman Trunk Road up-gradation project in Middle and North Andaman, being carried out by NHIDCL.
Sources said,at the time of accident both the loaded tippers were over the bridge, while the second truck went down with the bridge the other truck was struck near one end of the bridge.
As per reports both the drivers of the Trippers came out safely from their respective vehicles and reached shore after this accident. There is no report of any other causality.
Meanwhile the Deputy Commissioner of North and Middle Andaman, Mr. Awanish Kumar told reporters that he is aware of the situation and he is ‘on it’.
