Port Blair, July 15: Hundreds of Tsunami hit farmers of South Andaman region will stall the Andaman Trunk Road, the life line of A & N Islands tomorrow to protest against the move of local Administration to demand surrender of land of tsunami hit farmers, in lieu of compensation.
The Andaman and Nicobar Administration recently announced that the Expenditure Finance Committee of the Central Government in its meeting held on 27 June 2012 had approved the grant of compensation in lieu of submerged land of the farmers affected by Tsunami.
But the farmers of South Andaman and Nicobar District are in no mood to surrender their land in lieu of any compensation.
“The farmers have collectively resolved not to surrender their land to receive compensation for land loss in a tsunami. Tsunami affected farmers, headed by Gram Vikas Samity will stall roads tomorrow in protest. All political parities except Congress have assured to support the agitation,” Rakesh Lall, General Secretary of Gram Vikas Samity told ‘Andaman Sheekha’ today over phone.
Lall added that affected people from four sections viz. Penal Settlement Pre-42, 1949 East Bengal Refugees, Campbell Bay Ex-Servicemen Settlers and various private plot owners will join the demonstration seeking withdrawal of the administration’s decision.
“We will continue the protest till our demands for release of compensation without surrendering land is met,” the General Secretary of GVS added.
A delegation of GVS had recently visited New Delhi and met top Minister and also the Prime Minister of India with this demand.
“This is sad to note that despite specific assurance from Prime Minister the Administration is compelling farmers to surrender their land in lieu of compensation,” Lall added.
