Diglipur, Dec 17: The general public of Diglipur are witnessing sky rocketing of poultry chicken price due shortage of chicken supply in the region. Meat shop owners are claiming that the shortage is due to some disease among poultry chickens.
Diglipur is having about 10 chicken shops in market but all these shops have very limited chicken supply. Due to this the Local chicken is being sold at Rs. 320 rupees per Kg and the Vanraja variety which used to cost Rs.200 per Kg has also been raised to Rs. 320 to Rs. 240 per Kg.
To deal with the shortage the chicken shops tried to bring chicken from Port Blair, which adds Rs. 60 extra on each chicken.
Marriage parties and hotels are badly hit due to this. Last week chickens worth several lakhs rupees died, following which the sole producer and the largest supplier of the Diglipur suffered.
Since then supply is only limited, the shops are striving hard to meet the demand. Moreover the price of chicken feed is also increasing regularly.
Till today the Chicken business is totally depended upon mainland India. The Veterinary Doctor of the region is on leave to mainland and cannot be contacted for his comment.
“There is no government aid for farmers in distress. Such diseases also reduce the capacity to produce eggs,” the ZP member Aerial Bay Mr. Boby said.
He added that the profit in the business was decreasing every year and hardly gives any returns in this business.
Talking to Andaman Sheekha, Dr NG Poddar, Director, Animal Husbandry said that he has not received any such reports from the Diglipur area and if there are any such diseases in the area there are two Doctors to look after. He said that mortality is always there but not very huge.
