Port Blair, Nov 16: An accident occurred in Birchgunj Chowk, near District Jail this morning. The Truck heading towards Birchgunj Chowk lost control and hit a 24-25 years old youth who was walking on the side of the road towards Birchgunj Chowk.
The youth reportedly died on the spot, and the eyewitnesses covered the body with a sheet. The Pahargaon Police Unit responded to the scene immediately on information.
As per reports, the deceased was recently married and was working in the APWD section of District Jail as a Daily Rated Mazdoor. The Driver of the Truck, Rupnesh Kerketta, 28 years after hitting the youth escaped from the sight.
Sources said that brake fail was the reason the Driver lost the control over the truck resulting into the Accident. It is also learnt that Policeman who later on tried to drive the same Truck to the Police Station, also jumped out of the Truck as he couldn’t control the Truck because of the brake failure. Later the truck was towed to the Pahargaon Police Station.
However resident of the area and also a senior leader of Congress Party, Mr Rajesh Ram claimed that most of the trucks which are deployed for carrying stones from Quarry at Birchgunj and Brookshabad area do not undergo proper maintenance procedure, even the authority doesn’t conduct proper checks before giving them the permission to ply, which results into frequent accidents in the area.
