Bambooflat, Mar 22: The piles of garbage all over Hope Town are mocking the glittering advertisements about ‘Swacch Bharat Abhiyan’ as the panchayat has adopted a negligent attitude towards the maintenance of cleanliness and hygiene in various parts of the village.
A tour of one of the Block here exposed the working of civic bodies as garbage could be seen scattered in the absence of disposal bins and speaks volumes about the work of Panchayat. The solid waste is becoming a health hazard in rural areas where the mechanism for disposal of waste is not up to the mark.
According to the distressed villagers several times they have raised the issue regarding indiscriminate garbage dumping in various parts of the village but were later overlooked.
Speaking to Andaman Sheekha the residents of the Hope Town village informed that there is a need for installation of dust bins at several places from Bambooflat to Hope Town.
“Commuting through the road side daily is really horrible experience & due to lack of dust bins we are forced to throw the waste either on road side or into the sea” says a resident.
When questioned with the Pardhan, Gram Panchayat, Hope town Mr. Madhusudhan Rao, told Andaman Sheekha that Two Lakh Rupees fund, sanctioned for a year, by the Govt. is insufficient to manage the work.
“We have made strategies for the improvement of garbage management in villages but to implement the same there is no fund” also the conditions goes worst during the monsoon where cleanliness is to be done on priority basis to avoid water borne diseases, he said.
He further informed that many a times he has already taken up the matter to the concerned higher authorities of A&N Administration and also demanded for the procurement of Garbage disposal vehicle which was ignored saying that due to less population of the area the vehicle cannot be provided. The distressed villagers now demand intervention of Secretary of RD in this regard.
