Diglipur, Dec 08 : The unexpected rains that lashed a large part of North and Middle Andaman in the last two days have spelled doom for farmers, as reports of extensive damage to crops are pouring in.
November-December are the months when crop is harvested, but due to the cyclone ‘Vardah’ in the last two days, has dashed hopes of so many farmers.
Crops like Cauliflower, chilli, dal and vegetables are the main losses also in many places sacks of paddy storage were ruined which caused huge damage to farmers.
The immediate effect of heavy rains is evidence in the vegetable and fish markets. Vegetable prices have gone up by 50 percent in the markets due to short supply and non availability of fish at fish market, Diglipur.
As per experts, the prices could go up further if rain lasts for long. VS Pally, RK Gram, DB Gram & Sitanagar village farmers are heavily affected. The agriculture and Revenue authorities were also seen taking stock of the situation.
Similarly it is learnt that crops of Billyground and Rangat region also suffered heavy damages.
