Port Blair, Nov 23: The Directorate of Disaster Management, A&N Administration conducted an awareness-cum-sensitization programme on Disaster Management & Preparedness for staff and officials of Directorate of Shipping Services on 23rd November, 2016.
Shri T.K.S Ajayan, Assistant Director (Ops), DM briefed about the risk, hazards, vulnerability profile of A&N Islands. He also added that, Andaman & Nicobar Islands are highly susceptible to disasters of varied intensities that we cannot prevent this natural phenomenon (disasters) to happen but definitely with a holistic and a meticulous approach & plan we could reduce or minimize the impact of disasters. He also highlighted the disaster preparedness, plan, response, mitigation and capacity building of this territory.
Shri Gyan Singh, Assistant Director (Log.), DM highlighted present location of the department buildings of Shipping Services which are very vulnerable to disasters like Earthquake, Tsunami and Cyclones and every staff/officers are to be known about Standard Operation Procedure of the department and this type of disaster awareness and preparedness programmes would more helpful to masses to save their lives during any disasters/emergencies.
Shri Deen Mohammed, Safety Officer elaborated about the functions of State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC) and EOCs and its dissemination of messages and blasting of Sirens to general public for WATCH, ALERT & WARNING during emergency situation and take necessary precautionary measures as per the advise issued by the SEOC and EOCs. He also emphasized on the need to keep disaster kit in each household which should contain important documents and other articles like torch, radio, some drinking water, biscuits etc.
The programme begun with welcome address by Shri Mahinder Singh, Asst. Marine Engineer and Shri Harish Yadav proposed the vote of thanks to the gathering.
