
Port Blair Oct 23: NTPC (National Thermal Power Corporation) will set up two Solar storage power plants with a total capacity of 25 MW at Port Blair as part of Centre’s bid to replace polluting diesel generators.
According to the plan agreed between NTPC and the Andaman administration, one plant with 8 MW capacity will be constructed at Chidiyatapu and the other with a capacity of 17 MW will come up at Manglutan. both will be linked to the Port Blair grid. The power generated from these solar plants shall contribute towards increased renewable energy deployment and greening of Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) has been signed between NTPC, Andaman & Nicobar Administration & Ministry of New and Renewable Energy in New Delhi on 20th Oct. The Centre through the ministry of new and renewable energy, will meet 40% of the cost through grant meant for special areas.
Presently A & N Islands installed capacity is 68.46MW in which 63.21MW is generated from diesel and 5.25MW from hydro power. 42 power stations annual energy production is 201million units and for that 48,000 kilo liters diesel is consumed for 81,000 consumers. The peak demand for power is 37 MW.
