Port Blair, July 18: In continuation to the month long celebration of 67th Van Mahotsav 2016, a mass tree planting ceremony was organized by Forest Extension & Publicity Division at Kendriya Vidyalaya No. 2 at Minnie Bay. Mr Rajesh, Chief Conservator of Forests (Research & Working Plan) was the chief guest on the occasion. Mr Govindarajan, Incharge Principal and Smt Nabanita Ganguly, Divisional Forest Officer, Forest Extension & Publicity Division planted a sapling each. The students of KV-2 enthusiastically participated in the tree planting drive.
Addressing the gathering, the chief guest informed that the Department of Environment & Forests celebrates the Van Mahotsav-The Festival of Trees, through out this month of July. Further he said that though the Van Mahotsav was introduced in the year 1950, we should not confine ourselves to plant trees in the particular month of July and insisted the students to take up planting activities throughout the year. He also informed that plants being autotrophs are the only living organisms capable of converting light energy into food. Every type of food we consume, whether non-vegetarian or vegetarian, it is derived directly or indirectly from plants. Plants not only supply oxygen but also benefits in innumerable ways by supplying fibers, gums & resins, oils, wood, thatching leaves and therefore the human kind will not be able to survive without trees.
He further urged the students to make it a habit to take care of newly planted trees, not to damage them and to consider trees as our best friends. Ms. B. Sonia of class XI proposed the vote of thanks.
