Port Blair, January 20: The Lt Governor, Lt Gen A K Singh (Retd), today felicitated students of Govt. Girls Senior Secondary School, Port Blair for winning the first prize in the Visual Art form in the ‘Kala Utsav’ competitions, an initiative of Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) to identify artistic talent in school education. Govt Girls Senior Secondary School represented our Islands in the Visual Art category and their theme was “Hidden Art of our Tribes-Body Accessory Painting of Jarawa & Onge tribes”. The aim was to give art & culture of our indigenous tribe a national platform.
Speaking on the occasion, the Lt Governor complimented the six talented young students of the Girls School for bringing laurels to these Islands by winning the first prize among schools of the country. Girls’ power in Andaman and Nicobar Islands is admirable. In the national games, the Girls team helped us reach the 17th position and today also they have made all of us proud, said a happy Lt Governor.
Complimenting the Education department, the Principal and teachers of the school for nurturing such talent in their school, the Lt Governor observed that the school should touch excellence in every field and develop it as a model school. The students of this school are immensely talented and we should strive to upgrade this school in every sphere, he observed. On this occasion, the Lt Governor announced that the Principal and her team of Girls School should choose any project worth rupees one lakh and give it to the Education department and the department will complete the project. He also complimented the teachers, specially the fine arts teacher for choosing an important subject, conducting intensive research and encouraging the students to take up the project.
Motivating the students to do well in all spheres, he said nothing is beyond your reach, you should dream and pursue it with your effort and hard work, and success will be yours. Describing Health & Education as the two important sectors where focussed attention is given by the Administration, he said health is necessary for today’s citizen and education is necessary for tomorrow’s citizen and added that we need to put our best efforts and best resources so that our children are able to compete at the National level. He wanted that similar competitions should also be held in the Islands.
The Lt Governor also presented cash award of Rs 2500/-and certificate of merit to each of the six students of the Govt. Girls Sr. Secondary School. A visual presentation of the e-Project was also screened on the occasion.
Kumari Smitha Sarkar, a student of the winning team shared her experience regarding their participation in the competition. She informed that their effort were appreciated by the Hon’ble HRD Minister, Smt Smriti Irani.
Earlier, welcoming the chief guest and others, the Principal Secretary (Education), Shri Raajiv Yaduvanshi said it is indeed a proud occasion for the Islands. This has provided opportunity to the students to display their artistic talent at the National level.
The function concluded with the vote of thanks proposed by the Secretary-cum-Director, Smt Tanvi Garg.
