Campbell Bay, September 16: In a planned operation, Campbell Bay Police unit arrested a 24-year-old man at around 3:30 PM today and recovered 5.28 grams of ganja and 1.8 grams of methamphetamine from his possession.
According to information available, the suspect had arrived in Campbell Bay on the Port Blair–Campbell Bay ship, which departed on the morning of September 15 and reached Campbell Bay on September 16. Police had reportedly received prior information through their sources that a person carrying suspected narcotic substances was travelling to Campbell Bay.
Instead of immediately intercepting him at the jetty, police reportedly kept track of his movements after he came out of the jetty. The suspect was later stopped near the Catholic Church in Campbell Bay while travelling on a friend’s motorcycle. During the search, police recovered the suspected contraband from his possession.
The accused was subsequently taken to the police station, and further legal proceedings are underway. The exact source of the substances and where they were procured from has not yet been established.
The operation was carried out under the supervision of DSP Samuel Fred, SHO Mithun Kirtaniya, and the Campbell Bay Police team. The coordinated operation highlights the importance of intelligence-based policing in preventing the movement of narcotic substances into the region.
The incident also raises an important question regarding passenger screening before boarding ships bound for Campbell Bay. If narcotic substances can potentially reach Campbell Bay despite passenger checks, should the existing screening system be strengthened further?
With cases involving narcotics being reported in Campbell Bay, there is a need for stronger preventive measures. The Nicobar Administration may consider further strengthening passenger screening so that prohibited substances do not reach Campbell Bay.
It is also requested that the SP, Nicobar consider arranging a trained dog squad in Campbell Bay to assist the police in detecting narcotic substances and in tracing and disrupting networks involved in their movement.
