Port Blair, Jan 17: The ICAR-Krishi Vigyan Kendra, N & M Andaman , organized a three days training programme from 11th to 13th January on ‘Plantation crop based multi-tier cropping system’ for rural youth of N & M Andaman at Panchayat community Hall Dhramapur village under Sivapuram Gram panchayat. The training was inaugurated by Pradhan ,Sivapuram Gram Panchayat in presence Dr. B.L.Kasinath, Sr. Scientist & Head, KVK, N &M Andaman and Dr.Ajitwaman ,Dr. Pooja Boorh scientist (Horticulture)While addressing the gathering the chief guest, Pradhan, Sivapuram, lauded the efforts takenby KVK, N & M Andaman for organizing the above training and also urged the trainees to disseminate the knowledge& technology gained during the training programme to the farmers & farmwomen. Dr. B.L. Kasinath, Sr. Scientist & Head, KVK, gave a detailed account of role of KVK in strengthening agricultural activity and importance of plantation crops and the intercrops inside the plantation orchards of N & M Andaman and also highlighted on the nutritional significance of vegetables& fruits in our daily diet.
Dr. Ajit Waman, Scientist (Horticulture) briefed about the objectives of the training programme and explained the cultivation of important spice crops inside the arecanut and coconut plantation and their high value potential to contribute more income generation. Dr. Pooja Borha Scientist Horticulture briefed about nutritional importance of non-traditional fruit crops (Ram butan, durians, mangosteen etc) suitability for intercropping inside plantation crops and its good potential of high market value in near future.
In the 2nd of training Sh. Debabrata Basantia, SMS(Horticulture) briefly described the tier system of cropping inside the arecanut and coconut plantation ,proper layout and cultivation techniques of suitable tier crops. Dr. Sadrul Vikram SMS (Animal science) also explained the problems relation low milking of cattle and feed management for animals.
In the concluding ceremony a field day was conducted on ginger crop at Mr.Jopesh farm Dhramapur village for practical demonstration of intercropping in coconut orchards. The farmers of this village was very for this training program me and demand some good planting materials of tuber crops, gingers and spices in the coming season. A total number of 26 farmers and farm women participated in this training. The training was organized under the supervision of Dr. B. L. Kasinath, Sr. Scientist &Head ,N& M Andaman and under the guidance of Dr. S. Dam Roy, Director, CIARI, and Port Blair.
