Port Blair, Sept 11: The Sanitation Wing of Port Blair Municipal Council organized an awareness campaign on Swachh Bharat Abhiyan at Govt. Sr. Sec. School, Garacharma here on Friday. More than 669 students from Class VI to XII, 40 teachers and Principal of the school participate in the programme, which was aimed an education students on the importance of solid waste management system at source level for successful and innovative management of solid waste essential to bring out significant improvement in the health and sanitary standards in the life of the citizens.
The Senior Sanitary Inspector and Nodal Officer, SWM, Mr Vijay Kumar, gave a demonstration on identification and segregation of waste at source especially Wet and Dry waste. He also briefed the gathering about different categories of waste and stressed on the importance of waste management at the school and household level. The Public Health Awareness Group of PBMC presented a song of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan to motivate students. The Junior Engineer, SWM, Mr AK Athikesavan emphasized on the importance of vermin-composting at source level and a suitable place was identified in the school campus for construction of Vemin-Composting Pit.
The Principal of the School, Smt Anand Kumari, adopted primary Solid Waste Management system in the school with the active participation of teachers and students. Each class has been provided with proper dustbins for disposal and segregation of dry waste at source level.
