Baratang, July 09: Even as Baratang in Middle Andaman is home to several government establishments and schools, dilapidated quarters and dearth of private rented accommodations have become a deterrent for employees posted in the region. According to reports, almost all government quarters of various departments are in a decrepit state owing to maintenance issues, while private homes available on rent are on the higher side, that too in limited numbers. Vexed over the poor state of government quarters, government staffs posted in the region have been long demanding construction of Working Men and Women Hostel.
“When placed on transfer or posted to Baratang, we expect allotment of government accommodation. But after joining service, we realize the quandary to endure with during our tenure. Government quarters of almost all departments are in a dilapidated state, some in their last legs. Some occupants abandon the quarters within days and shift to private accommodations. Several abandoned spaces have become heaven for stray animals. Almost all government quarters should be renovated and repaired before allotting them to government employees,” said a PRI member of the region.
The other issue haunting government staffs at Baratang is exorbitant rates of rented accommodation. Available in limited numbers, house owners charge about Rs 3500-4000/- per month for a single room accommodation. Even amenities like water supply, electricity etc are not proper in the rented houses. Some are forced to share accommodation with their counterparts. Majority of the government employees posted in this region hail from Port Blair and other parts of South Andaman and keep their families back home during the tenure. The administration should consider construction of Working Men and Women Hostel in the region for the benefit of the employees.
“The Administration must study the feasibility of construction of a Working Men and Women Hostel at Baratang. If considered, the Hostels will be a boon to several government employees posted in the remote territory. The move will also encourage government employees to serve the region dwelling together in a Hostel during their tenures,” the PRI member added.
