Port Blair, Apr 02: The rage among Truck Owners and traders of TMT bars led to a major protest at School Line this morning. Vexed over action on vehicles carrying protruding articles that brought the construction industry to a halt recently, the protestors blocked vehicular movement on the road stretch at School Line for over 3 hours demanding prompt redressal of their grievances.
The general public bore the brunt of the agitation as no vehicles were allowed to commute from either ways of School Line and Minnie Bay Junction from 11 am to 1 pm. Bus passengers were the worst hit as the protestors didn’t allow STS and private buses to move during the demonstration.
“Such agitations should be held after wider publicity in the local media to prevent public from being harassed. No one was aware of the protest today and bus passengers were left stranded for hours in the scorching heat. The protestors should have atleast allowed public transport vehicles to commute,” said some irate residents.
According to information, the truckers and dealers of TMT bars are demanding relaxation on transport of the commodity vital for the construction industry.
The recent police action on vehicles carrying protruding articles has paralysed the construction and many wholesale and retail units of TMT bars are running short of the commodity. Moreover more than 1500 MTs of TMT bars are lying unclaimed at Haddo Wharf due to the embargo.
