Port Blair, Apr 10: Mr. B.P.Ray, Member of Parliament, had recently raised a question in Parliament to know about total no. of Anganwadi in these Islands. He also wanted to know that out of these Anganwadi centres, which are not provided with basic infrastructure, safe drinking water, toilets, sanitation etc.
Answering the question Smti. Krishna Tirath, Minister of State for Women and Child Development has now stated in the floor of the Parliament on 23.03.2012 that there are 699 Anganwadi Centres (AWCs) (680 AWCs and 19 mini-AWCs) in Andaman & Nicobar Islands, of these, 320 AWCs/ mini-AWCs do not have own safe drinking water and 552 AWCs/ mini-AWCs do not have own toilets/ sanitation facilities.
“The UT of A & N Islands has informed that they have proposed to provide basic infrastructure facilities such as safe drinking water, toilets/ sanitation, etc. in A & N Islands to those AWCs owned and constructed by Andaman Nicobar Administration/ PRI during the 12th Five year Plan period,” the Minister added.
