Port Blair, Dec 05: The members of Mohanpura Majid Committee along with the residents of Mohanpura area staged a mass protest this morning in front of ANIIDCO wine shop of Mohanpura and demanded closure of the outlet. More than 100 people took part in the protest.
According to reports, since last two years the members of the Masjid Committee and the residents of the area have been complaining to the higher authorities for shutting down the wine shop at Mohanpura, but no action was taken till date, which resulted in today outburst.
Talking to Andaman Sheekha, Mr Azizur Rahman, Councillor (Ward number 6), Port Blair Municipal Council, said that this is a long pending demand of the committee and the residents of the area.
“After consuming liquor people create nuisance in the area, making things extremely difficult for local residents,” Mr Azizur said.
Further Mr Azizur said that there were also cases of Chain snatching, purse snatching by the alcoholics in the area.
The Majid committee along with some residents of the area today met the Deputy Commissioner today, who assured to look into this matter and also urged the committee to submit written complaint.
The committee members told Andaman Sheekha that if within one month the wine shop is not closed then they will resort to ever bigger agitation.
