Billyground, Dec 5: A battered and bumpy road stretch is inviting public ire at Mayabunder in North Andaman. The 40-50 ft uphill stretch to the office of the Tehsildar, Mayabunder, which caters to a huge population in the region, has become an irritant for the residents, who visit the office in hundreds daily. The situation is such that many faint midway while marching to the office, while others suffer muscle strain traversing the difficult terrain.
According to information, hundreds of residents from Swadesh Nagar to Mohanpur visit the office for various revenue matters on a daily basis. They disembark from buses or Jeeps at Lucknow Stand in front of the DE Office and then have to walk uphill to reach the Tehsildar office. However, the steep hill, pot-holed and bumps on the road has made the 50 ft journey cumbersome for the residents. “It is like going to the office of Yamraaj. Senior citizens, women often sit on the main road to rest while traversing this battered stretch. The condition of the road is such that it is even difficult for the motorists to negotiate. Imagine the plight of pedestrians. The road was constructed from ZIlla Parishad funds, but the agency never bothered to ensure proper maintenance of the vital road stretch. After being elected to power, the Zilla Parishad members never care to address the issues of the common people,” said some furious women, who were sitting on the road stretch mid way.
The Tehsildar, Mayabunder said that the poor condition of the road was brought to the notice of the higher authorities in the district administration. But no constructive action has been taken in this regard, he said. On the issue of slow pace of execution of revenue matter, the Tehsildar said that the office is suffering from dearth of staff. “Of the required 6 Patwaris, only 4 are dealing with the heavy work load here. Besides, lack of Sweeper and Peon in this office is also affecting smooth functioning.” Assuring to redress the public grievances, the Tehsildar vowed to continue serve the residents with greater efficiency.
