Port Blair, Dec 03: As part of the Navy Week Celebrations 2014, the Andaman & Nicobar Command is attempting to hold events for the local populace across the Islands. One such event to showcase its growing maritime stature in consonance with its theme ‘Ensuring Secure Seas for a Resurgent Nation’ was undertaken by the Indian Navy at Diglipur.
Indian Naval Ship LCU-37 deployed for coastal surveillance mission off the Northern Group of Islands was thrown open to the local residents at Diglipur Jetty from 29 to 30 Nov 14.
Approximately 500 locals including children visited the ship and witnessed a well planned guided tour of the ship. A short brief on the history of the Indian Navy and its three dimensional force structure, its pivotal role in coastal and off shore security, anti-piracy, anti-poaching, disaster relief missions and evacuation of Indian citizens and other nationals from conflict zones remained the highlight of the occasion.
A short exposure on the amphibious capability of the ship, deployment of army troops / tanks was also undertaken. In addition, pamphlets covering the entry procedure to join Indian Navy in various cadres were distributed. Parents were appreciative of the ship’s staff for promoting career avenues and providing exposure at a remote location for their young children and were enthused that this effort would certainly go a long way in inspiring the youth of the Islands to join the Indian Navy.
Sumptuous meals and refreshments were an added attraction. The local residents felicitated Indian Navy’s efforts in vigilance and safeguarding the nation’s maritime interests. The local civil authorities opined that visits by larger number of Indian Navy ships would accelerate development of the place to a large extent.
