Port Blair, Nov 24: From a remote school in Middle Andaman surfaces a shocking revelation that will seriously stain the noble teaching community in these Islands. Allegations are rampant that teachers posted in Oralkacha School have plundered cots and other furniture from the Girls hostel, which was closed since last many years.
The hostel, which earlier had many beds and furniture in its premise, now barely has 12 beds, forcing most of the students to sleep on floors of the building.
According to information, many parents of students of the school have raised the issue with the concerned authorities about the plunder of hostel furniture.
“The hostel was closed for many years and before closure there were sufficient number of cots and beds in the hostel. But as years passed, teachers posted in the school started taking the furniture items with them after they were transferred to Baratang region. It’s a shame on the teachers’ community. Considered as builders of the nation, if teachers resort to such illegal doings what will our children learn?” said an angry parent .
The practice has continued unabated since many years and presently not a single bed was available in the hostel.
When contacted the inchrage of the hostel said Andaman Sheekha correspondent that nearly 12 beds were sent to the Hostel earlier this month, when report was sent from the Hostel about the present situation. Still the Hostel is short of 12 beds as the strength of the hostel is nearly 24.
Intervention of the Education Department is immediately required to address the situation at Oralkacha. A thorough probe should be ordered and teachers, if found guilty, should be taken to task.
Similarly, efforts should also be taken to provide essential furniture items like beds etc to the hostel for the benefit of the inmates.
