Mayabunder, Oct 31: Mahatma Gandhi Govt. College, Mayabunder organized a mega seminar on the topic “20 years of Panchayati Raj Institutions in A & N Islands – Success and Failures” in the college conference hall on 31st Oct. 2014 at 0900 am.
Mr. Srinivasan, Adhyaksha, Zilla Parishad, Mayabunder was the Chief Guest and inaugurated the function in presence of Dr.R.N.Rath, Principal, MGGC, Mayabunder Mr. Sony Thomas, Upadhaksha by lighting the lamp.
A few PRI Members and Heads of Departments/Offices were present in the function. The Upadhyaksh addressed the gathering and briefly spoke about the failure of Panchyat Raj Institutions such as shortage of fund, staff and lack of training for PRI members about proper utilization of funds. It is also reported that the allotted fund is very less comparing to the estimated cost of the works projected for each panchayat resulting non completion of the work in time and finally sufferer are the villagers / public.
Talking to our reporter one of the Samithy Member informed that the concerned authority are not cooperating with the PRI and also not delegating the actual powers really deserved to the PRIs and the administration is also not giving much important to the work and development of rural areas instead of concentrating the development of urban localities.
A Zilla Parishad Member informed that if the 20 years of Panchayati Raj Institutions in A & N Islands is a total failure then the entire responsibility goes to A & N Administration.
Zilla Parishad Member of Baratang Mr. Kurma Rao stated that PRI was successful during the period from 1995 to 2005 and thereafter following some illegal works the PRI system failed.
Other than this Mr. Hiranmoy Roy, Pradhan of Harinagar, ZP Member of Kadamtala, Mr. Bawali also addressed the gathering.
Dr. S. Sreekumar HOD, JNRM Port Blair explained the need of women empowerment in PRI through a power point presentation.
