Port Blair, Sept 3: Having recovered from a deadly tumour that dislocated his right eye ball, Porimal Das, a Diglipur resident, is for all praise for the fellow Islanders and Administration for the financial aid extended generously.
After grant of financial assistance of Rs 50,000 initially from the LG’s Relief Fund, an article brought to light the misery of Porimal Das in its edition on March 20 this year urging islanders to come forward to financially help the patient for undergoing specialised treatment at mainland.
Responding to the appeal, flurry of donations from a large number of benevolent persons and organisations poured in for the patient.
With adequate funding, Porimal underwent surgery at Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences recently. The fatal tumour behind his right eye, was removed and Porimal is now fit and reunited with his family at Diglipur. About 30 percent of vision of his right eye was recovered, but he is still unable to open his eye lid. However, Doctors have advised him that he will recuperate with further treatment soon.
“I am extremely indebted to the Islanders and also to Administration for the timely assistance rendered for my treatment. Besides grants from the LG’s Relief Fund, people from various parts of these islands contributed generously enabling me to undergo expert treatment at mainland. I have been suffering for the tumour for the last 14 years. I could not carry out my daily work and my wife used to toil the entire day to feed the family,” said Porimal Das, a Barber by profession.
“Studies of my daughters and a son also suffered during the period. My entire family was under immense stress when Islanders came to our rescue. I sincerely convey my profound gratitude to the each and every Islander, who gave me a fresh lease of life. I have recovered completely from the tumour and will soon lead a normal life with my children and spouse,” says Mr. Das.
Mr. Porimal Das has again started his work in a Barber Shop but is unable to cut hairs for long time, he is now looking for a new job, which suits his restricted abilities.
Andaman Sheekha’s Facebook Group has name of all the donors who have donated money generously for the treatment of Mr. Porimal Das. Among others Dr. Chakroborty donated Nearly Rs. 1,42,000, Mr. Joy Basu from Thailand donated Rs. 74,000, AIMS, Kochi waived off Rs. 30,000, Mr. Amit Goenka Donated Rs. 15,000.
