Port Blair, Sept 07: The Indian Tsunami Early Warning Centre (ITEWC) at Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services, Hyderabad, Ministry of Earth Sciences, Govt. of India is conducting Mock Tsunami Drill (IOWave14) on 09th, Sept, 2014 from 0530 hrs to 1730 hrs in coordination with IOC/ UNESCO as a Regional Tsunami Advisories Service Providers(RTSP).
This mock Drill provides an opportunity for Disaster management authorities to exercise their operational lines of communication, exercise Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), review tsunami warning and emergency response procedures and to promote emergency preparedness.
The mock drill will simulate tsunamis originating from earthquakes sources on successive days, one in the eastern Indian Ocean and the other in the North-western Indian Ocean. The first scenario simulates a magnitude 9.1 earthquake south of Java (10.4 S, 112.8 E), Indonesia and will commence at 0530 hrs IST on 09th, Sept, 2014. The second scenario simulates a magnitude 9.0 earthquake in the Makran Trench, South of Iran and Pakistan (24.9N, 62.2E) and will commence at 1130 hrs IST on 10th, Sept, 2014. We are concentrating only on 9th, Sept, 2014 for conduct of the mock exercise.
The State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC), Directorate of Disaster Management, A&N Administration made wide and elaborate arrangements to participate in the exercise in coordination with the line departments/stakeholders,(6) six Emergency Operations Centre at Campbell Bay, Kamorta, Car Nicobar, Hutbay, Port Blair, Mayabunder and DM Cell at Diglipur alongwith other control rooms of DHS, DSS, PBMC, PCR, PMF, FIRE and Electricity department.
This exercise was planned to test all the available mode of communication links available in these Islands to record the elapsed time period and its gaps to overcome with alternative communication channels for disseminating future threat through a fail free communication channels and hone the decision making abilities against the challenges of natural disasters.
Public are advised to not to panic during the conduct of Mock Tsunami DrillIOWave14 which has been scheduled on 9th, Sept, 2014 from 0530 hrs to 1730 hrs (IST).
