Port Blair, Sept 07: Animal Science Division of Central Island Agricultural Research Institute in collaboration with Directorate of AH & VS, A & N Administration organized an awareness programme on “Foot & Mouth Disease in Livestock” at Community Hall of Calicut Village on 6th September 2014. A total of 23 farmers and livestock owners of the area were attended the awareness programme. This programme has been organised in continuation of the sensitization and awareness programme for the farmers for the Foot and Mouth Disease in livestock. The Directorate of AH &VS is being carrying out 17th round of FMD vaccination in the South Andaman area.
Mr. Abdul Manaaf, Pradhan, Calicut village was the Chief Guest. Speaking on the occasion, he thanked the CIARI and DAH&VS for conducting such awareness programme for the benefit of the livestock and farmers of Calicut area. He assured fullest cooperation for the FMD control programme and urged all the farmers to make use of the opportunity to cover all the animals under vaccination cover. In addition to the FMD vaccination programme, he also requested the SVO to provide the vaccination cover to the poultry of their area against the several dreaded diseases of poultry.
Dr. Jai Sunder, Sr. Scientist & Principal Investigator of the FMD Control Programme, CIARI explained in detail about the causes, symptoms, treatment and control measures of the FMD in livestock. He requested all the farmers to cooperate with the DAH&VS to achieve the target of 100 % vaccination in the area. He also replied to the several queries raised by the farmers for the treatment and control of the FMD.
Dr. K. Mohammed, Sr. Veterinary Officer, Garacharma, DAH&VS, A & N Administration gave brief overview of the FMD and the importance of vaccination programmes initiated by the department. He informed that 16 round of vaccination have already been over and 17th round is in progress. He also assured the farmers for all the support and benefit from the department for the development and progress of animal husbandry activities in the area. Earlier he welcomed the gathering and also concluded the programme by giving vote of thanks.
