Mayabunder, Sept 02: Respite in the form of exclusive College bus came short-lived for students of Mahatma Gandhi Government College (MGGC). Introduced by the State Transport Department between MGGC and Rangat on a daily basis after persistent efforts of the Principal MGGC, students are currently piqued over the service as the buses of small chassis with seating capacity of just 35 seats are unable to cater to about 90 students, who avail the bus service daily.
The STS Department introduced the bus service between our college and Rangat after rigorous efforts of the Principal. However, the small-seater buses (35) deployed on the route has turned futile as the very purpose of student’s benefit has been defeated. More than 80-90 students avail the service daily between Mayabunder and Rangat. But due to the limited seating capacity, many students are forced to suffocate in the jam-packed for nearly 2.5 hours. While, some of our batch mates have fallen ill recently after being choked in the mini STS buses, many other fail to board the bus due to the rush. The situation has worsened as Bus operators often allow local passengers to commute in the buses introduced mainly for the benefit of the college students,” bewail some college students speaking to Andaman Sheekha
According to sources, the aggrieved students of the institution met the Principal recently and highlighted the need for introduction of long chassis buses in the route for the benefit of students. The Principal, MGGC, Dr RN Rath has reportedly placed the demand before the State Transport Authority.
Admitting that the demand of the college students was genuine, the Assistant Engineer (Mech.) and Junior Engineer (Mech) of STS Rangat Division vowed to deploy long chassis buses with larger seating capacity in the route from Sept 3, 2014 exclusively for the college students.
Speaking to Andaman Sheekha Mayabunder Correspondent, students of MGGC expressed delight over the assurance of the Transport officials. “With the introduction of larger buses, students of the institution will be able to travel in comfort between Rangat and Mayabunder to attend the classes.” The Principal, MGGC and the students also expressed gratitude to the Assistant Engineer and Junior Engineer of Rangat unit for promptly considering the demands of the students.
