Bharat Nirman PIC in Remote Nancowry Island attracted Huge Crowd
Port Blair, February 3: The remote tribal Island Nancowry witnessed the first ever tribal women Canoe Race on high sea this morning. The First Lady of the Islands, Smt Suneeti Singh flagged off the race at Kamorta Jetty amidst huge gathering. Altogether 24 women, four in each traditionally decorated Canoes participated in the race. The Canoe of Munak village came first, while Ramchaw and Kamorta villages bagged the second and third positions respectively. Champin, Balu Basti and Hockey ground Kamorta got the consolation prizes.
As part of the three-day Bharat Nirman Public Information Campaign-2014, currently underway at Kamorta Island, a Bharat Nirman Marathon on the theme “Taking Rural India Forward”, was held earlier in the morning. The marathon was flagged off by the Deputy Commissioner (Nicobar District), Ms Sakshi Mittal. This mini marathon started from Indira Park and culminated at Bada Enak village.
About 200 people, including tribal leaders, officers, Navy personnel, tribal girls and boys and students participated in the marathon. The Lt Governor, Lt Gen (Retd.) A K Singh himself participated in it and finished the race.
In the men group, B Singh, Devender and Guldeep Soreng secured the first, second and third positions respectively, while Venkatesh and Jana got the consolation prizes.
In the women group, Selvi, Jyothi and Kumodhini bagged the first, second and third prizes, while Jyothi Xalxo and Loveline were awarded consolation prizes.
The Lt. Governor gave away the prizes and trophies along with certificates to the winners at Kamorta Jetty amidst large gathering of tribal people of Nancowry. The Lt Governor congratulated the participants and assured full support in fulfilling all the genuine requirements of the people of Nancowrie group of Islands. He also announced that a Cycle Race and Marathon will be organized in Car Nicobar and Nancowrie respectively as regular annual events to promote sports among the tribal.
