Port Blair, January 22: For Rasheeda, a helpless lady of Wimberlygunj, getting justice for her daughter N. Ramzan Begum, who committed suicide allegedly at the instigation of her husband Sahil Aziz, was quite a battle.
She had to wait for more than a year, just for getting a FIR registered against the husband of her late daughter, who the family believes had a very sour relationship with his wife and instigated her daughter to commit suicide.
Poor Rasheeda ran from pillar to post for getting her case registered, but nobody showed any sympathy for her nor helped her get a FIR registered.
According to Rasheeda, the mother of the deceased N. Ramzan Begum, a school teacher, her daughter was harassed and mentally tortured. Her husband also frequently demanded money from her. Unable to bear the agony and pain and at the instigation of her husband, the ill-fated girl allegedly committed suicide.
Finding no other option, she met the Lt Governor, Lt Gen (Retd) A. K. Singh during his Tuesday’s public hearing and sought justice for her deceased daughter.
According to people, who were present in the public hearing, an aghast Lt Governor issued directions to the top brass of the Police Department to immediately register a case against the husband of late N. Ramzan Begum. The lady was sent to meet the officiating DGP immediately and place her grievances before him.
It is learnt that on hearing her narrative, the officiating DGP, Mr. Balaji Srivastava immediately directed the Superintendent of Police (M&N Andaman) to register a FIR against the accused under appropriate sections of law. A copy of the FIR was also dispatched to be delivered to her at her residence.
At the same time, the DGP ordered a preliminary inquiry against the then SHO (Mayabunder) for not taking any action even after being approached by Smt Rasheed and her family.
When contacted, the DGP told this Correspondent that the inquiry will be done in a time frame and on the basis of the investigation and facts, stringent action will be taken against the guilty.
Justice may come a little late but the assurance, that the Administration is still listening to those who are remote islands and voiceless, is a great blessing. Such immediate action by the Lt. Governor serves as a strong message for those officers of ground level, who are law unto themselves.
