Port Blair, Nov 14: The Directorate of Disaster Management is all set to conduct a Mock Drill for disaster Preparedness on Nov 20 to Nov 22, 2013 in most of the inhabited Islands of Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The mock drill aims to spread awareness among the Islanders for disaster preparedness.
Addressing a press conference at Office of Directorate of Disaster Management, Mrs. Punya Salaila Srivastava, Commissioner-Cum-Secretary, Disaster Management, today advised the general public not to panic during the drills since it is just a mock exercise and the situation is not of a disaster.
She further advised the people to comply with the instructions of the officers and adhere with the traffic police.
Further she explained the detailed strategy by which the mock drill will be conducted. The directorate of disaster Management with the help of different wings of the administration has prepared a detailed plan to conduct the Mock Drill.
Mrs. Punya Salaila Srivastava further informed the potential vulnerability of Andaman and Nicobar Islands to different type of disasters, she informed that the geographical disasters in Andaman and Nicobar rangers from Earthquake, Tsunami, Volcanoes, Global Warming and Land Slides. She also informed about the Hydro Metrological Disaster vulnerability in Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
The hydro metrological disasters that she mentioned were Cyclone, Flood, Storm Surge and Tornado.
She also informed that the State Control Rooms have been equipped with all modern facilities to tackle the disaster and can be contacted by dialing the toll free number 1077. She further informed that the Chief Secretary is the Responsible Officer (RO) for the incident response at UT level, Commissioner (DM/RR) is the Incident Commander (IC) at UT level.
She also added that the DC’s are the responsible officers at District Level and AC’s are the Incident Commanders at Sub Divisional Level.
She also added that to make the general public aware the directorate is running ads on the local channels and also they are advertising through the All India Radio and concluded the conference by explaining various aspects of the Mock Drill.
