School built after tsunami in horrible shape
Staff Correspondent
Car Nicobar, Mar 11: Brand news school buildings with broken doors, fallen ceilings, weak window panels, no desk benches are enough to understand how good is the infrastructure of Education Department, in Car Nicobar Island.
After tsunami altogether eight schools were constructed by Churches of Northern India (CNI) and Andaman PWD, out of which six were donated to Education Department by CNI.
Though Primary School Kimus, Senior Secondary School Sawai, constructed by APWD, are in good shape, other six schools donated by CNI are in total bad shape.
Within three years of handing over by CNI, the Primary School Kinyuka, Middle School Kinmai, Secodary School Mus, Secondary School Kakana, Sr. Secondary School Lapathy and Primary School Tee Top have started giving nightmare to students.
Due to poor quality construction works doors of many class rooms have been uprooted, in one school the ceiling had collapsed, the window panels are unbelievably shaky and fail to stop rain water during rainy season. Often pigs enter inside class rooms and school campus to give these schools a perfect eco-friendly look. Photographs available with Andaman Sheekha are enough to understand the situation.
Not only this, students have other problems too. Most of the schools do not have desk benches. Though the Chamber of the Director of Education has been given a royal look with top class interiors, students studying in these schools mostly sit on the floor. The desk benches given to Education Department after tsunami broke into pieces within two years of tsunami and since past nearly three to two years students in Car Nicobar are sitting on the floor.
According to reports there is a shortage of nearly 1000 pairs of desk and benches in Car Nicobar Islands and after demanding for the same for nearly last two years recently the Education Department has sent only 300 pairs of desk benches for Car Nicobar Schools, which have been equally distributed among all schools of Car Nicobar. But still there is a shortage of nearly 700 pairs of desk and benches in the remote Islands.
Car Nicobar Is believed to be the capital Island of Nicobar District and if this is the situation in Car Nicobar Island, one can easily imagine what would be the situation in other remote Islands of Nicobar District.
This the time for Administration to introspect that what has gone wrong with the Education Department of Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Why from almost every corner of these Islands issues relating to negligence, mismanagement and failures of the department are popping up in media. Perhaps this is high time for the Lt. Governor to intervene into this matter and take some strong steps to bring the education system back on the right track, for the sake of poor students, who are the future of these Islands.
