Port Blair, Sept 22: The Coast Guard Region(A&N) , as part of International Coastal Cleanup Day 2013 organized an impressive beach cleaning effort on 22 Sep 12 at Carbyn’s Cove beach with an aim to spread the awareness of environmental protection by protecting the beaches. Tatrakshika, the Coast Guard Wives Welfare Association (CGWWA) also associated with the event and actively participated in large number. The Coast Guard has been coordinating and conducting this event every year, under the aegis of United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) and South Asia Co-operation Environment Programme (SACEP). Simultaneous Coastal Cleanup drives were also undertaken at designated beaches of Diglipur, Campbell Bay, Mayabunder and Hut Bay by respective Coast Guard stations.
At Port Blair, all Coast Guard personnel along with their families and children, volunteers from Kendriya Vidhyalaya-II, Vivekanand Kendriya Vidhyalaya & Dr. Ambedkar Institute of Technology and personnel from tri-services also participated enthusiastically in the event at Carbyn’s Cove beach.
The Commander Coast Guard region (A&N), Inspector General VSR Murthy, President Tatrakshak Medal, Tatrakshak Medal was the chief guest for the occasion. President Tatrakshika (A&N), Mrs. Jyoti Murthy also graced the event. Speaking on the occasion, IG VSR Murthy expressed his gratitude for the overwhelming presence of the volunteers for the noble cause and urged all the participants especially the children from schools to share their experience with friends and fellow students at schools. He further stressed that the message being conveyed through Coastal Cleanup drive is for conservation and preservation of the marine environment.
Participants from schools and colleges were given certificates of appreciation for their useful contribution. Light refreshments were also given to all participants. At the end of cleanup drive large amount of trash collected during beach cleanup was disposed off through assistance of Municipal Corporation at Port Blair.
