Port Blair, June 25: The Centre Of Indian Trade Unions, Andaman and Nicobar State Committee has decided to carry out a territory-wide campaign during the month of July, 2013 by highlighting some of the demands which were adopted by the All India Conference of the CITU at Kannur in Kerala during April, 2013. A decision to this effect was taken in a meeting of the CITU A & N State Committee held at Port Blair recently.
One of the demands adopted in the Kannur Conference was on Food Security and asked the central government to incorporate the points of (a) universalisation and strengthening of public distribution system (b) 35 Kgs food grains at note more than Rs. 2 per Kg. (c) No cash transfer scheme and (4) scrapping of Planning Commission’s bogus poverty estimates for getting welfare rights – in the Food Security Bill.
The other demands adopted by the central trade unions are (1) minimum wage at not less than Rs. 10,000/- per month and its linkage with consumer price index for the purpose of Dearness Allowance (2) Same wage as regular workers for same and similar work for the contract workers in respective industries and establishments to be enforced stringently through appropriate amendment of Contract Labour ( Regulation & Abolition) Act, 1970, (3) universal social security coverage and assured pension for all workers both in unorganized and organized sector.
CITU State Committee has further decided to highlight local demands like (1) regularization of all daily-rated and contract workers (2) job to all the applicants for compassionate ground appointments (3) filling up of vacant posts, etc. The meeting was presided over by Mr. SB Chatterjee while Mr. B. Chandrachoodan, General Secretary spoke.
