Sri Vijaya Puram, July 29: The India Meteorological Department (IMD), through the State Control Room, has forecast thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds and lightning over the Andaman & Nicobar Islands during the coming days, with heavy rainfall also likely over the Nicobar Islands.
According to the forecast, from July 30 to August 4, thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds of 40–50 kmph are likely to occur at one or two places over the Andaman & Nicobar Islands. In addition, heavy rainfall (7–11cm) is likely at isolated places over the Nicobar Islands from August 2 to August 3.
A Fishermen Warning has also been issued for the Andaman & Nicobar coast. Squally weather with wind speeds of 35–45 kmph, gusting up to 55 kmph, is expected to prevail along and off the Andaman & Nicobar coasts till July 30. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea during this period.
The IMD has also issued a Swell Surge Alert for the Andaman & Nicobar coast. Swell waves of 1.4 to 1.5 metres with a wave period of 16–20 seconds are expected till 11.30 p.m. on July 30. Authorities have advised that there is a possibility of surging waves and urged boats to ply with utmost vigilance. People visiting beaches or engaging in recreational activities along the coast have also been advised to exercise due caution.
A Farmer Warning has been issued indicating that from July 30 to August 2, thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds of 40–50 kmph are likely at isolated places across the Islands. Heavy rainfall is also likely over the Nicobar Islands from August 2 onwards. Farmers have been advised to take necessary measures to safeguard crops, livestock, and agricultural equipment.
The outlook for the subsequent two days indicates little change in the prevailing weather conditions. Residents are advised to monitor official weather updates and follow all safety advisories issued by the authorities.
