Sri Vijaya Puram, June 28: Increasing number of road accidents especially fatal road accidents and involving grievous injuries in the UT is an area of serious concern for the UT Administration. Sensing the criticality of this road safety aspect and on the direction of Secretary (Transport), Transport Department has intensified the enforcement drive with an objective of not only identifying the violators but also to sensitize them about the ill effects of violation of traffic rules.
Enforcement drive was carried out on 27.06.2024 at Sippighat and Brichgunj with the objective of ensuring compliance with motor vehicle regulations and for enhancing road safety.
During the drive, enforcement teams checked a total of 93 vehicles, including two-wheelers, three-wheelers, LMV/LGVs, trucks, and buses. Upon inspection, 17 vehicles were found to be in violation of various provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act and were accordingly actions were taken against them as per the legal provisions.
The following violations were observed during the enforcement drive:
1. Driving vehicles without fitness thereby violating section 56 of MV Act.
2. Driving vehicles without valid permit which is violation of Section 66 of MV Act.
3. Without possessing valid Pollution Under Control Certificates (PUCC) mandated under Rule 98 of ANIMVR, 2006.
4. Plying vehicle without mandatory valid insurance as required under Section 146 of MV Act.
5. Non-payment of road tax as required under A&N Tax Regulation,
6. Instances of carrying ticketless passengers in public transport vehicles by private Stage Carriage buses violating section 124 of the Act have also been observed.
7. Carrying more passengers than the registered seating capacity by violating Section 194 (A) of the Act.
Violators were penalized and an amount of Rs. 40000/- have been realized from the violators.
All the drivers have also been sensitized about the importance of adherence to Motor Vehicle Laws. Transport department therefore earnestly appeal all the users of motor vehicles to strictly follow the Motor Vehicle Laws in true spirit and any lackadaisical approach will have dangerous consequences for the driver as well as fellow road users. Considering the importance of road safety, Transport Department will continue to undertake such drives at regular intervals across different locations all across the UT.
