Sri Vijaya Puram, June 16: Questions have been raised regarding the condition and protection of one particular Diesel Generator (DG) set installed under the Electricity Department at Mayabunder, particularly whether the equipment is adequately safeguarded from rain and other weather-related factors.
Speaking on the matter, Ms. Meena Kumari, Samiti Member, Mayabunder told Andaman Sheekha that an inspection of the site had been carried out and the generator sets were found to be installed under a shed. According to the Samiti Member, major DG units, are located within a covered structure. However, one particular DG Set remains open from the sides.
She noted that while direct sunlight may not significantly affect the generator, rainwater splashes during heavy showers could potentially reach certain parts of the equipment. While no immediate threat was reported, she said that additional protective measures could further safeguard the infrastructure.
She added that the matter has reportedly been brought to the attention of senior administration officials, with directions issued to ensure that proper care and monitoring of the equipment are maintained.
She further stated that maintenance of the DG set remains the responsibility of the private company operating the equipment, as it is in the company’s own interest to keep the machines functioning efficiently.
When asked about a long-term solution, she suggested that the operating company should strengthen preventive maintenance practices and consider additional protective arrangements wherever necessary to minimize weather-related risks and ensure reliable power generation.
