
Sri Vijaya Puram, June 05: World Environment Day was celebrated with great enthusiasm and a strong commitment towards environmental conservation through a series of plantation drives organized at Kanyapuram, JNRM Campus and Chinmaya Mission Campus on 05 June 2026.
The main programme was organized by MY Bharat, Sri Vijaya Puram, in association with Nai Manzil (NGO), Wimberly Gunj, near Markaz School, Kanyapuram, Wimberly Gunj, South Andaman. The programme witnessed active participation from youth volunteers, PRI members, villagers, students, Forest Department officials and members of civil society.
Mr. Sarat Kumar, IFS, Assistant Conservator of Forests (ACF), Forest Department, Wimberly Gunj, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. The Principal, Markaz School, Kanyapuram, attended the programme as Guest of Honour. Mr. P. Abdul Basheer, President, Nai Manzil (NGO), respected villagers, PRI members of Gram Panchayat Kanyapuram and officials and staff of the Forest Department were also present on the occasion.
During the programme, nearly 1000 saplings of different indigenous and environmentally beneficial species were planted. The saplings were provided by the Forest Department, Andaman & Nicobar Administration. Adequate arrangements for protective fencing and safeguarding of the planted saplings have also been made to ensure their survival and healthy growth. Participants collectively resolved to undertake regular monitoring and maintenance of the saplings for the long-term benefit of the environment.
Addressing the gathering, the Chief Guest emphasized the urgent need for environmental conservation, biodiversity protection, sustainable development and community participation in combating climate change. He highlighted the importance of increasing green cover and encouraged citizens, particularly youth, to actively contribute towards protecting nature and preserving ecological balance.
As part of the World Environment Day celebrations, two additional plantation programmes were organized by Andaman Mahila Mandal, Sri Vijaya Puram, in association with MY Bharat, Sri Vijaya Puram, at Jawaharlal Nehru Rajkeeya Mahavidyalaya (JNRM) Campus and Chinmaya Mission Campus, Sri Vijaya Puram.
At the JNRM Campus, plantation activities were carried out in the presence of Dr. R.G.S. Bhagal, Principal In-Charge, JNRM, the NSS Programme Coordinator, faculty members, NSS volunteers and students. Mr. Sukha Ranjan Biswas, Joint Director, MY Bharat, Andaman & Nicobar Islands and Mr. Deepak Kumar, District youth officer also participated in the plantation drive and planted saplings along with students and volunteers. The programme focused on promoting environmental awareness among students and encouraging educational institutions to play an active role in ecological conservation.
At the Chinmaya Mission Campus, the plantation programme was conducted in the presence of Swami Suddhanand Saraswati, Secretary, Chinmaya Mission, along with officers of MY Bharat, including the Joint Director and District Youth Officer. Saplings were planted across the campus premises and participants pledged to continue efforts towards maintaining a green and sustainable environment.
The programmes were organized with the objective of creating awareness on environmental protection, conservation of natural resources, climate resilience, waste reduction, water conservation and increasing green cover through community participation. The activities also aimed at inspiring youth and citizens to adopt environmentally responsible practices and contribute towards building a cleaner, greener and healthier society.
The organizers expressed their sincere gratitude to the Forest Department, Andaman & Nicobar Administration, for providing quality saplings and extending technical support for the plantation drives. Appreciation was also conveyed to all dignitaries, PRI members, educational institutions, NGOs, volunteers, students, youth participants, local residents and officials whose wholehearted support contributed to the successful conduct of the programmes.
The celebration of World Environment Day reinforced the message that environmental protection is a collective responsibility and that every individual can contribute towards safeguarding nature for future generations.
“Our Earth, Our Future, Our Responsibility” remained the central theme of all the programmes, reaffirming the commitment of stakeholders towards environmental sustainability and ecological conservation.
