
Smti. Lata Hegde Prasad joined the Department of Environment and Forests as a Forest Ranger on 01.03.1988and was subsequently promoted to the post of Assistant Conservator of Forests on 27.06.2012. She holds the unique distinction of being the first woman Range Officer as well as the first woman Assistant Conservator of Forests in the Forest Department of the Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
During the 1980s, the duties and field responsibilities associated with the Forest Department were extremely demanding and challenging, particularly for a woman officer, as forestry service was traditionally regarded as a male-dominated profession. The nature of work involved arduous field assignments, extensive touring in remote forest areas and functioning under difficult climatic and logistical conditions.
Despite these challenges, Smti. Lata Hegde Prasad displayed extraordinary courage, determination and professional excellence throughout her career. With unwavering dedication, sincerity and a strong sense of duty, she discharged her responsibilities with exceptional efficiency and competence, proving herself equal in every respect to her male counterparts. Her discipline, leadership qualities and tireless commitment to public service earned her immense respect and admiration within the department as well as among the people she served.
In recognition of her meritorious service and outstanding capabilities, Smti. Lata Hegde Prasad was inducted to the Indian Forest Service (IFS) in the year 03.03.2025. With this achievement, she once again created history by becoming the first woman IFS officer from the Islands.
Throughout her distinguished service of 38 years, Smti. Lata Hedge Prasad served in various capacity across almost all the forest division of A& N Islands and made significant contributions towards forest protection, wildlife conservation, biodiversity management, field administration and the effective implementation of various departmental programmes and initiatives under challenging working conditions. Her dedicated service greatly enhanced the reputation and image of the Department of Environment and Forests.
Beyond her professional accomplishments, Smti. Lata Hegde Prasad emerged as a source of inspiration and motivation for generations of women aspiring to join forestry, wildlife conservation and environmental services. Her achievements broke barriers and demonstrated that determination, hard work and commitment can overcome social and professional obstacles.
Smti. Lata Hegde’s illustrious service stands as a shining example of perseverance, dedication, integrity and women’s empowerment in government service. Her pioneering role and invaluable contributions to the Department of Environment and Forests will always be remembered with pride, gratitude and deep appreciation.
