Sri Vijaya Puram, April 23: The Congress party registered a significant political victory in the Sri Vijaya Puram Municipal Council with the election of Ms. Vasantha as Chairperson, triggering celebrations among party workers across the islands. The win is being viewed as a major morale boost ahead of the senior leader’s scheduled visit on April 26.
The election to the office of the Chairperson for the fifth year term (2022–2027) was held on April 23 at 3:30 PM in the Conference Hall of the Sri Vijaya Puram Municipal Council, under the chairmanship of Deputy Commissioner, South Andaman, Ms. Purva Garg, IAS. Following the proceedings, Ms. Vasantha, Councillor of Ward No. 12, was declared elected as Chairperson for a period of one year for the fifth year term, in accordance with the provisions of the Andaman and Nicobar (Municipal) Regulation, 1994. The oath of office is scheduled to be administered on April 24 at 5:00 PM at the same venue.
According to official details, Ms. Vasantha defeated BJP candidate Mr. Karunanidhi in a closely contested election. She secured 13 votes, while Mr. Karunanidhi received 11 votes.
Party leaders and workers described the victory as a result of sustained hard work, unity, and strong public support. Speaking after the results, Ms. Vasantha told media persons that this was not her first attempt, recalling that she had previously contested but was unsuccessful. “This time, with determination and collective effort, we have secured the mandate of the people,” she said.
Addressing civic concerns, she acknowledged that water scarcity continues to be a long-standing issue affecting residents. However, she expressed optimism that several ongoing and upcoming major projects would significantly improve the situation within the next year. She also assured that efforts would be made to secure necessary funds and work closely with the administration to address public issues effectively.
Mr. Ganesh Kumar Yadav in charge of the Congress in Andaman & Nicobar Islands said that this is a “gift” to Rahul Gandhi ahead of his visit, especially since the party had been perceived to be short of numbers in the council. “This result signals a changing political mood and a positive shift that is beginning from the islands,” he remarked.
Mr. Rangolal Halder the President of ANTCC credited the unity of councillors, grassroots workers, and supporters for the success, emphasizing that such coordination was key to achieving the result.
