Sri Vijaya Puram, Mar 27: In a significant step towards energy self-reliance and sustainable farming, the Department of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services (AH&VS), Andaman & Nicobar Administration, organised a specialised training programme for farmers at the Model Biogas Plant located inside the Perka Dairy Unit on 27th March.
A group of 20 farmers from Tapoinming Village actively participated in the hands-on session, which provided practical knowledge on the installation, daily operation, and maintenance of biogas plants. The Perka Model Biogas Plant served as a live demonstration site, showcasing how dairy waste can be converted into clean, renewable energy.
The Department emphasised that biogas is not merely an alternative fuel but a complete waste-management solution. By adopting this technology, farmers can simultaneously address two critical challenges: reducing dependence on expensive and difficult-to-transport LPG and firewood for cooking and lighting, and improving soil health through the use of nutrient-rich digested slurry as a high-potency organic fertiliser that boosts crop yields.
The training highlighted biogas as the most viable and “suitable energy” option for the Nicobar Islands, especially in the face of rising fuel costs and supply-chain vulnerabilities. The Department urged participants to view biogas adoption as a strategic move towards local energy independence and long-term sustainability.
This initiative reflects the AH&VS Department’s proactive approach to promoting green technology, waste-to-energy solutions, and climate-resilient farming practices in remote island regions.
