Port Blair, May 27: Heavy rain in Andaman and Nicobar Islands has caused serious damaged to a sluice gate at Wandoor Village of South Andaman, causing ingression of sea water in Wandoor and Hymfrygunj villages and serious loss to many families.
Following the incident, a team of South Andaman Zilla Parishad, led by the Chairperson, Mrs. Abala Samadder, today visited the villages of Wandoor and Humfrygunj, which were bad hit because of the damaged sluice gate.
Another team of A & N Administration consisting of the Chief Secretary and the Deputy Commissioner also visited the affected villages to see the ground realities, sources confirmed.
Meanwhile, the Congress unit of Andaman and Nicobar Islands has demanded immediate assessment of the losses incurred by the villagers, whose houses and cultivation land have been inundated with sea water, because of the damage in the Sluice Gate.
“The damaged sluice gate of Wandoor has caused heavy financial loss to the inhabitants of the nearby villages. The sea water has now flooded nearby villages damaging houses and roads. A large area of paddy field and other standing crops have been inundated with sea water,” Mr. Kuldeep Rai Sharma, the President of PCC told media today expressing serious concern about the villagers of Wandoor and Humfrygunj areas.
Meanwhile, Sharma has requested the Deputy Commissioner of South Andaman to assess the damages so that these villagers could get adequate compensation from the Administration.
Andaman and Nicobar Islands have been receiving heavy rain since last three days. The Monsoon 2013 had hit Andaman and Nicobar Islands on 15 May 2013.
