Sri Vijaya Puram, Jan 11: Frustrated by prolonged government inaction, auto-rickshaw drivers and local residents of Garacharma have come together to repair the severely dilapidated TTI Road through a voluntary community initiative. Despite repeated complaints over the years and official estimates amounting to more than six crores of rupees, the hazardous condition of the road has remained unattended by the Public Works Department and the local administration.
With deep potholes posing serious safety risks to commuters, especially schoolchildren, and causing frequent damage to vehicles, the local community decided to act on its own. Auto-rickshaw drivers, residents, and members of the Auto Stand Garacharma and BYC Club jointly collected funds and organized voluntary labour to carry out temporary repairs on the road. The repair work is currently underway and is being live telecast to draw public attention to the issue.
Social worker Mr. Diptendu Das Gupta, who initiated the effort, said the initiative was not meant to replace government responsibility but to ensure immediate relief to road users. Local leaders alleged a continuing pattern of bureaucratic negligence, stating that concerned departments keep shifting responsibility instead of releasing sanctioned funds.
The community described the initiative as a peaceful protest and an appeal to elected representatives to address the long-pending infrastructure issue. Organisers asserted that such self-funded repair work would continue until the government fulfils its responsibility of providing safe and durable road connectivity in the area.
