Baratang, Dec 03: A major disaster was averted at South Creek, Baratang, after the prompt and coordinated response of the FS Baratang firefighters successfully neutralised a potentially catastrophic LPG leak. The incident occurred when a truck carrying LPG cylinders for distribution in Rangat and owned by M/s Asmani Indene, was parked in the busy South Creek market area. A leaking cylinder was detected, creating an extremely dangerous situation due to the high flammability of the gas and the dense population in the vicinity.
A local resident, Mohd. Sahid, immediately alerted the authorities after noticing the leak, following which the firefighters rushed to the spot without delay. Upon arrival, the team swiftly took charge of the situation. They cleared the area and instructed shop owners and residents to switch off all lights and electrical appliances to avoid any chance of ignition. With the help of the truck driver, they identified the faulty cylinder and carefully removed it from the vehicle.
To prevent further leakage and eliminate the risk of an explosion, the cylinder was submerged in a nearby pond, allowing the gas to cool and disperse safely. The firefighters ensured that the remaining gas was fully exhausted before the deteriorated cylinder was discarded.
Their timely intervention prevented what could have been an enormous tragedy, especially given the commercial surroundings and crowded neighbourhood. The fire service personnel also issued a stern warning to the dealer and the truck driver, stressing the importance of proper maintenance and the dangers associated with transporting damaged cylinders.
The FS Baratang firefighters’ quick thinking, professionalism and commitment to public safety not only protected human lives but also prevented property damage potentially worth crores of rupees.
