Sri Vijaya Puram, October 3:A major eruption was reported at the famous Mud Volcano located at Jarawa Creek in Baratang on the morning of October 1 at around 11 am. During the eruption, a mixture of gas, mud, and water burst out under high pressure and spread across the surrounding area.
The Mud Volcano is a well-known tourist attraction of Baratang region, drawing large numbers of visitors every day. At the time of the incident, some locals were present with a group of tourists. Observing unusual activity that indicated a possible eruption, they promptly alerted the visitors and safely escorted them to a secure location.
According to eyewitnesses, the eruption was so powerful that the mud and water flow broke through the protective railings installed at the site. Unlike regular volcanoes that spew lava, this Mud Volcano releases gas and mud mixed with water under immense pressure.
It is worth noting that just a few days earlier, India’s only active volcano on Barren Island had also erupted, with its photos and videos gaining widespread attention across the country. The latest eruption at Baratang’s Mud Volcano has now raised fresh concerns about public safety in the region. Authorities are currently monitoring the situation and have advised tourists to exercise caution.
Meanwhile, the residents of the area are now demanding that the Administration must designate a geologist to the spot to monitor the volcano, ensure the safety of people living nearby, and study its possible future impacts.
