Port Blair, Mar 12:The Lt Governor, Lt Gen (Retd) Bhopinder Singh, PVSM, AVSM has announced a job and cash award for Kumari Deborah, who had won one Silver and two Bronze medals in the 33rd Hero Asian Cycling Championship being held in Indira Gandhi Stadium Velodrome, New Delhi. The Lt Governor has announced cash award of Rs 7,00,000/- for winning Silver and two bronze medals in the Asian championship besides a job for the top cyclist. The Lt Governor had already sanctioned an amount of Rs 1,25,000/- in favour of Kumari Deborah for winning 2 Gold and one Bronze medals in the National Championship during 2011-12.
The top cyclist from Kakana village, Car Nicobar is the first girl in the history of sports of the Islands to win three medals in the Asian Cycling Championship. Ms Neeta is another girl from Car Nicobar who had won two Silver medals in the Asian Cycling Championship held in Ludhiana in 2003.
Deborah started her winning streak by winning her first Bronze medal in the junior 500 mtrs time trial event on 7th March 2013. She then went on to win her second Bronze medal in the women’s junior team sprint on Sunday. The team of Deborah and T. Manorama Devi, a Manipuri girl defeated Malaysia to bag the third place.
The most scintillating performance of the 18 years old Deborah came on Monday, when she clinched the silver medal in the tournament. In the final of the junior women’s 200 mtrs sprint individual race on Monday, she won the silver medal. The Lt Governor has also congratulated Kumari Deborah for her commendable performance in the International sports championship and for bringing laurels to the Islands and the country as well.
