Port Blair, July 24: The Dundas Point Jetty is in a state of disrepair, causing inconvenience and safety concerns for residents and commuters.
As per details, the structure itself is extremely old, with its exact age unknown. The devastating 2004 Tsunami further exacerbated its condition. While some repair work was undertaken following the disaster, it has proven inadequate in addressing the overall structural integrity of the jetty.
Adding to the woes of passengers is the complete lack of basic amenities.
Talking to Andaman Sheekha, Mr. Venkateshwar, Pradhan of Namunaghar village outlined a series of problems plaguing the jetty. The jetty currently does not have ‘functional’ toilets or a public washroom, creating a significant hardship for those using the facility. The existing toilet block is unusable and hardly anyone can enter inside. Mr. Venkateshwar also pointed out a large, unused space near the existing jetty. He believes this area could be effectively utilized for constructing a new, well-functioning jetty equipped with a passenger waiting hall and toilet blocks.
Perhaps most concerning is the apparent lack of response from the administration. Mr. Venkateshwar revealed that he has submitted multiple letters highlighting these issues; however, he has yet to receive any acknowledgment or witness any action taken.
The dilapidated state of the Dundas Point Jetty poses a significant safety risk and creates unnecessary discomfort for passengers. “There is an urgent need for the authorities to take immediate action. A thorough assessment of the jetty’s condition is essential, followed by either repairs or the construction of a new facility with proper amenities to ensure the safety and comfort of all who utilize this vital transportation hub,” he added.
