Port Blair, Feb 20: Residents living in the vicinity of Church Hill Road in Prem Nagar (Carmel School Road) have raised concerns regarding the illegal parking of tourist vehicles along the roadside, exacerbating the already congested conditions of the thoroughfare. Speaking to Andaman Sheekha, locals expressed dismay over the frequent occurrence of tourist vehicles occupying space on Church Hill Road, which has considerably narrowed the passage for regular traffic. This, they fear, could potentially impede emergency services like movement of Ambulance and Fire Tenders, during times of crisis or disasters.
According to regulations, tourist vehicles are required to declare designated parking areas before obtaining permits to operate. However, it has been observed that many vehicles, which have assigned parking spaces at locations such as Calicut and elsewhere, are openly flouting these regulations by parking along the narrow stretch of Church Hill Road.
The blatant disregard for parking regulations not only undermines the law but also poses a significant risk to the safety and convenience of local residents. This issue is not unique to Church Hill Road, as numerous neighborhoods across Port Blair with narrow access roads grapple with similar challenges related to illegal parking.
In light of these concerns, residents are urging the Traffic Police to take proactive measures to address the issue. They have called for conducting nocturnal surveys to identify illegally parked tourist vehicles and levy fines accordingly.
