Port Blair, Dec 23: Expressing concern over the Delhi’s recent Gang Rape case, hundreds of women today gathered and held a peaceful protest rally at the heart of Port Blair city, demanding strict and quick action against the rapists.
Following spontaneous calls, from various corners of Andaman Society, more than 500 women gathered at Gandhi Statue Junction of Port Blair city this evening and shouted slogans and demanded justice for the rape victim.
In the rally, women from all casts and religions and all political parties joined hands, braving heavy rain. Some were holding placards demanding strictest possible punishment for the rapist.
“Law must be made more stringent against rapists for the safety of women, who are no safer on roads,” Mrs. Shanta Laxman Singh, a senior Congress leader told ‘Andaman Sheekha’ today.
Meanwhile, the A & N Police made elaborate arrangement to make sure that the peaceful protest rally does not take violent shape.
“We have made all necessary arrangement to ensure safety of everyone,” a senior Police officer told ‘Andaman Sheekha’.
Despite rain the rally continued for more than an hour. Women passed to the main market of Port Blair city and Raj Niwas before culminating.
“We are here to show our concern for the rape victim and show that we all standing behind her,” Mrs. Singh added.
