Port Blair, Feb 24: The Indian Navy and Indian Coast Guard have apprehended a Myanmarese fishing boat with six crew members for illegally fishing in Indian waters near Andaman and Nicobar islands. The boat was sighted by the Indian Navy during a maritime surveillance mission and further information was given to the Coast Guard.
According to sources, the boat was apprehended near East Island after it did not respond to very high frequency (VHF) calls and tried to avoid apprehension with evasive maneuvers. However, the Coast Guard ship intercepted the boat and found it to be of Myanmarese origin and engaged in illegal fishing in the Indian waters.
The boat and its crew members were escorted to Diglipur on Wednesday afternoon and handed over to Andaman and Nicobar police for further investigation. The illegal fishing activity by the Myanmarese boat in Indian waters is a violation of maritime laws and the authorities are taking strict action against such activities.
