Port Blair, Jan 02: In a significant development, noted social worker of New Pahargaon, Smt Rafat Jan joined the Congress party along with her supporters at Gandhi Bhawan on Sunday. Smt. Rafat Jan had contested in the 2015 Municipal Council election from New Pahargaon constituency as a TDP Candidate. She is also a former PRI member.
Speaking on the occasion, Smt. Rafat Jan said that Congress is the right party where she could take her social works forward. “I have joined a party with good leaders and with their help I will do more social works”, she said while stating that she will not fail the leaders for reposing their faith in her.
She further praised the leadership of ANTCC President, Mr Rangalal Halder and ANTCC Campaign Committee Chairman, Mr TSG Bhasker. “I feel happy to join the Congress party, not only because it is secular but the party leadership has vast experience and has always listened to the sentiments of the public”, she said.
Welcoming her to the party, Mr Rangalal Halder expressed happiness and said Smt. Rafat Jan has made a name of herself with her social works in New Pahargaon and also among women. “People have seen the Congress Government as well as the BJP Government and they have realized that they prospered under the Congress while they faced miseries under the BJP rule,” Mr Halder said.
Mr Bhasker congratulated Smt. Rafat Jan for taking the step of joining Congress and said that her presence will help the party strengthen further. He also said that the membership drive of Congress party is receiving tremendous support and many people are interested to join the party. He alleged that the BJP had only used the islanders to gain votes and later disowned them.
