Port Blair, Sept 09: ICAR-Krishi Vigyan Kendra, CIARI, Port Blair has organized a three days training programme on Integrated plant nutrient management system for farmers and farm women of Lambapahar of wimberlygunj Panchayat from 07th September to 09th September,2021. A total of 25 farmers and farmwomen have been benefited through this training. Dr. Y Ramakrishna, Principal Scientist & Head inaugurated the training programme and he highlighted the importance of integrated plant nutrient management system for sustainable farm productivity in these islands.
He advised to farming community to maintain soil organic matters which help to enhance water holding capacity, water infiltration rate, macro-porosity, soil aggregate stability and structure, nutrient balance activity and abundance of soil microbial biomass. Dr. L.B.Singh, Subject Matter Specialist (Horticulture) emphasized that role of organic manure in soil health and fertility management under high rainfall climatic condition. He urged the participants to adopt integrated use of organic compost with biofertilizers not only improve different soil properties and crop productivity but also significantly reduce dependency on use of chemical fertilizers.
Dr N. Bommayasamy, SMS (Agronomy) enlightened the resource component available for nutrient management through organic manures, crop residue, weed biomass, green manures, biofertilizers, various composting, live and dead mulching, liquid manures, botanicals, legumes in cropping system and 4 R concept in nutrient management etc.
He also advised ideal green manuring and green leaf manuring crops and its advantages and types of green manuring such as in-situ and ex-situ green manuring and potential of green manuring. Dr B.K.Nanda,SMS (Agrl.Engg.) highlighted that in high rainfall areas soil erosion is key processes degrading the surface structure of exposed soil by which topsoil is lost, which impairs soil fertility and results in unsustainable crop production. Dr Pooja Kapoor, SMS (Home Science) emphasised that recycling and utilization pathway of agricultural crop residues and various factors influencing in crop residues recycling. She advised to farm women to use crop residues of paddy straw, coconut coir for mushroom production and compost making.
